silverstripe?

A friend and I have been toying around with the idea of customizing wordpress (which powers chriswho) to turn it into a custom CMS that we could then turn around and use for freelance purposes. This weekend I came across Silverstripe though, and I’m wondering if we really need to do all that work - this could be what we are looking for. Has anyone ever heard of this (or anything like it) and have any recommendations or words of warning? I think I may try silverstripe out pretty soon. And being open source, we could still customize it as we want … If anyone has thoughts on this, I’d love to hear them.

Oh, and on the freelance side of things, sidejobtrack could be pretty cool.

Silverstripe looks interesting. I might have to give that a try. I think about CMSs a lot. I’ve toyed around with several. WordPress is good because it’s easy to set up and runs just about anywhere, but it’s way overkill and kind of inappropriate for basic content management. Rails is great and there are a couple of decent CMSs for it, but it’s trickier to set up and doesn’t run all that well on cheap hosting. Django is a little easier / faster to setup, but you still have the restrictions of hosting environments (Python, etc.).

I’ve been thinking lately of trying to build one from scratch using one of the Rails-like PHP frameworks: CakePHP or Code Igniter. That would entail quite a bit of tweaking, designing, and configuring to get it to do what you want it to for a client site. But when it’s done, it would run anywhere. I think those frameworks even work on PHP4(!).

This is an area that’s really ripe for a killer-app.

    Thanks Trey -
I agree this is an area that is ripe. I didn’t know that you were thinking about this also. Sounds like instead of duplicating lots of work, a few of us should maybe get together and see if we could come up with something …
