Yes, another installment of one of the more fun recurring tasks I get at work: Job Buddies. I reworked the other graphics as well trying to make the shadows look more like shadows and less like beards.

I’m not sure how they do it, but the Onion (aka America’s finest news source) managed to outdo itself yet again with this report.

In case you haven’t heard or seen this yet, check out this amazing end to the Trinity Millsaps game. 15 total laterals!!! The announcer goes a little overboard at the end, but the play itself is pretty amazing. Cal-Stanford‘s got nothin’ on this one…
For anyone who has spent any amount of time online or on youtube over the last couple years, a number of these should look really familiar. (Give it a second to get past techno viking, and then things pick up…)

My candidate of choice, Mike Huckabee, has the endorsement of pop culture laughingstock/icon Chuck Norris on his side. Yes, “Walker, Texas Ranger” himself has thrown his ‘considerable’ influence behind this dark horse candidate. Seems like Huckabee is getting some good press recently, and maybe, just maybe he’ll start being viewed as a viable contender to Romney, Thompson, Guilliani, and McCain…
Don’t forget, “Contrary to popular belief, America is not a democracy, it is a Chucktatorship.“
Liverpool visited Everton this week. Since both teams are in the same city, the match is refered to as a “derby” (pronounced “darby”). This is the longest standing derby in English football and the heat of the match can be intense.
Sadly a good match of football was heavily marred by the ref making decidedly lopsided calls in favor of Liverpool. Hibbert’s foul on Gerrard looked like a shoulder to shoulder hit, right on the line of the box, but I can see the ref calling that a PK and a yellow. Interestingly enough, you can see the ref pull out the yellow card, and then Gerrard talks him into the red (and Everton goes down to 10). Unreal.
Dirk Kuyt’s PK was good and the game is tied. Dirk then should have been escorted off with a red for his “leg-breaking” tackle (both legs cleats up) against Neville, however after a long talk with the ref, the ref is once again talked into only giving Dirk a yellow. Game should be tied up 1-1 and 10 v 10, but sadly, that is not the case.
In injury time, Neville hands a sure goal off the line and is quite justifiably given a red card for that. Dirk (who shouldn’t be on the field anymore) puts away another PK and the reds go up 2-1.
Even down to 9 men, Everton still managed to push the ball up and Lescott was pulled down on a fantastic scoring opportunity right in front of goal (second time in the game he had been man-handled, but this was the worst). Amazingly enough, not only was there no red card, no PK, there wasn’t even a foul called.
While I know I am biased, check out the video highlights yourself and see what you think… (this video was cut and uploaded by a Liverpool fan and pulled from “redsreview” so don’t claim biased editing or anything.
Relevant Magazine has an article worth checking out. Jason Boyett wrote 9 things to know before you hit 30, and there seems to be a lot of wisdom (aka – “advanced common sense”) in it. I’m doing ok on most, but could be doing a lot better on some of the others. Looks like I’ve got about 14 months to work on these…
Yes, Michael Vick’s Georgia home is up for sale. Any takers?

Reason #58 it is cool to work where I do:
We won an “essay contest” from Edy’s Ice Cream. So what you say? Edy’s wheeled in a freezer filled to the brim with Edy’s Dibs ice cream. Needless to say, many people around here are pretty happy about that. (Thankfully I’m not a big ice cream fan, cause that would just be dangerous…)
As a few of you know, my brother got a staph infection a couple weeks ago. I didn’t think too much of it until recent press stating “MRSA” (the staph infection) may kill more than AIDS. This is a new antibiotic resistant strain, and is far more serious than either of us had thought. Thankfully he is in excellent health and while the treatment has been inconvenient, he is almost back to full health. Takes more than a “Superbug” to take him down…

For those of you who haven’t seen the web comic xkcd.com, you are missing out. Very clever and creative. Who would have guessed that humor based on math, philosphy, programming, and anything else nerdy would be so great. For a small sampling, check out these…

The Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (FSM) is now recognized as the second largest “religious” group on the Missouri State University campus according to this news story (there is a quick ad before the video starts). This “church” has found a welcoming environment on college campuses thanks to our generation’s skepticism regarding authority/status quo as well as the liberal skewing of most colleges and universities.
“Pastafarians” or “spagnostics” as they are also commonly referred do an interesting job of asking all the right questions. I pray in a decade or so when the apparent invincibility and rebellious nature inherent in college students wears down, these questions will stick in their heads, and they will seek answers that at least “claim” to be truth …
If anyone has an empty space on their wall for some small artwork (6×6 in. not including a frame), check out A Day’s Work. Molly M. Brose (or Molly McCammon as I knew her back in high school) paints a couple pieces a week and sells them on her website. She has great talent and I’m honored to be the owner of “New Light“…
If you were looking to hire a designer, don’t tell me you wouldn’t at least give this guy an interview. Imagine being an HR person sifting through a stack of resumes and then that gets plopped on your desk. Memorable, purpose driven, humorous, well designed, very well executed (“I HELPED STEPHEN” stickers, coaster, badge, interview postcards) … ingenious.
I also appreciated his design police work. Cute concept for the design snob in each of us with some excellent advice like, “Comic Sans is illegal”, “Turn Hyphenation Off”, and “WARNING: low resolution image.”
Carnegie Mellon University has a wonderful lecture series they invite professors to take part in – “If you had one last lecture to give before you die, what would it be”. Dr. Randy Paush’s chapter in this lecture series will melt your heart. Do yourself a favor and carve out 90 minutes and listen to this lecture. Some parts may be a bit technical, but stick with it, it is worth it.
Dr. Pausch is a Computer Science professor at Carnegie Mellon University. The remarkable men and women who take up the teaching profession rarely get the recognition they deserve. Dr. Pausch is gaining lots of publicity (ABC news, Wall Street Journal, CBS news, etc) due to his attitude regarding his recently diagnosed terminal cancer.
We all have a lot to learn from the humility, humor, and dreams of this man. Thank you Randy for sharing your life and passion with your kids at CMU (and to a lesser extent, UVA) over the years and the rest of us over the internet. I’m thankful that you found a home at CMU that allowed you to flourish and affect so many lives.
A Pakistani friend of mine passed along this wonderful collection of Pakistani proverbs. Apparently something has been lost during translation…
A very interesting read on Apple’s attention being taken away from “computers” and onto other ventures. Worth a read. (I’m still thinking about getting a MacBook Pro though…)
I stumbled upon this article by Brian Kim titled “Top 5 things every extrovert should know about introverts“. I have no idea about Brian Kim’s credentials, but this article hit the nail on the head from my (admittedly introverted) perspective. Worth taking a few minutes to read if you want to understand the workings of our sometimes quirky social behavior.
While on this subject, I found an interesting read from USA today a year ago. “Not all successful CEOs are extroverts” discusses the introvert and extrovert division and how it relates to our business leaders. While Steve Jobs is on the extroverted end, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and many others find themselves on the introverted side.
