Relevant party

A gem from Relevant… so if Canada is America’s hat, is it fair to assume that we are Canada’s ‘Jorts’?

If you’re going to be in the Orlando area March 8, this party will likely be worth checking out:

Mason is a cute kid

Closeup of Mason

Mason is one really cute kid with a sweet face. Just turned 1. Taken with my Canon 20D, all the blurring is straight from the camera and lens (f1.4), no photoshop on this guy at all…

Underwater car?!

Ripped from a James Bond film “The Spy who Loved Me” this modified Lotus Elise goes underwater for 2+ hours worth of a scuba like experience. The one of a kind car, appropriately named “sQuba” is a concept car and likely will never be produced or available to the public. Too bad, I’m sure there are tons of people willing to shell out $2million for a 2 seater…

Tweet, tweet

Dear handful of marginally loyal readers -

In case any of you ever wondered aloud, ‘Chris is cool and all, I just wish he updated more,’ all I have to say is “Tweet, tweet“…

What do Winston Churchill, Ghandi, and Charles Dickens have in common?

A notable percentage of Brittish people think that Winston Churchill, Ghandi, Dickens, and many others are fictional characters!!!   In a new study that is difficult to believe, 23% of Britons believe that Churchill was a myth, and 58% believe that Sherlock Holmes was real!  I’m not really sure what else to say, but … ‘wow’.

In fairness, I was 95% sure Florence Nightingale was real, 75% sure of Richard the Lionheart, and it would have been a coin flip on the Duke of Wellington.  I’ve never even heard of Biggles…

Superbowl commercials - Doritos and eTrade

Not really caring about either the Patriots or the Giants, the superbowl was as much about the commercials as it was the game this year for me. While the game wasn’t filled with the offensive fireworks many expected, it was a great defensive chess match, and proved to actually be a good game.

The commercials however left a lot to be desired. Doritos came through again with the mousetrap, and both etrade baby commercials were huge winners in my opinion. On a side note, I thought Fox did a great job with their own in-game promos with the terminator fighting their football robot, etc. If you’d like to check those promos, or any of the other SB ads, check out the myspace page.

Downshifting and my generation

While I think “Hopping off the corporate bandwagon” by Paul Glavic may over simplify the issue, he sheds some light on a common thread that many of my friends (and myself) have been feeling now for a while. We simply do not have the corporate ambitions of previous generations of Americans (just look at the subtitle of this blog and you’ll notice I’ve felt this urge for a while - “Ambition is the enemy of success”).

My best friend hopped off the corporate train years ago. My roommate just recently downshifted from 40-50 hours to about half that. Even my brother (who is very corporately driven) turned down a HUGE promotion years ago because it would involve excessive travel and his quality of life would suffer.

I would consider myself someone who genuinely enjoys my job right now, however I would consider a 4 day work week (with full benefits), earning 20% less a very attractive proposition…

If government run healthcare were to ever take off here in the US (and I’m quite torn on whether or not I think that would be a good thing) , I would expect that a number of people miserable in their careers would drop them and choose to simplify their life while working 20-30 hours in a coffee shop or bookstore… Something to think about.
