Had a great night with the family last night, got some good photos out of it too.  All the kids are my cousin’s kids and they are adorable.

beheaded bottle
While cleaning out the fridge tonight, I ran across an aging unopened bottle of champagne. Instead of just throwing it out, my roommate and I decided to apply some of the valuable knowledge we have learned from Zane Lamprey of Three Sheets, and we “saber”ed it (used a machete and cut the top off or “beheaded” the bottle). Zane does this in the NYC episode (the one not on hulu) but I found this video of someone else doing it. Enjoy!

If you do it right, the pressure of the champagne takes the top cleanly off and it shot about 20 feet across my backyard into my neighbor’s yard. If we can find the top, I’ll post a photo of that as well.

Closeup of Mason

Mason is one really cute kid with a sweet face. Just turned 1. Taken with my Canon 20D, all the blurring is straight from the camera and lens (f1.4), no photoshop on this guy at all…

Canon 20DAs some of you have noticed from my most recent flickr uploads, I have a ‘new’ camera, a Canon 20D. This model is a few years old, but has a lot of the same specs and features of the 40D, but came at a far more reasonable price. (Thanks Rick!)  Merry Christmas to me!

CodyI was taking care of my parents dogs this weekend, so I had a few captive models. I’m still learning about this new camera, but loving it! Cody has proven quite photogenic, and the ability to take 5 photos per second came in handy while trying to catch him running in the backyard!

Paul has launched a new today.  His photography is beautiful… Take a few moments to enjoy.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I’m not sure what the story behind this clip is, but these clips tell a poignant narrative through the photography. (FYI – starts out with “false” nudity so watch at your own discretion… may not be safe for work)

I’m flattered you asked, but no … I just play one on Flickr.

This weekend I hit the 200 picture limit on flickr.  I decided that it is worth it for me to go ahead and bite the bullet and upgrade to flickr pro.  I’ve loved flickr ever since Patrick showed it to me, and it is one of the best web apps out there in my opinion.  I think Yahoo! made a great choice buying them a few years ago.

As many of you know, I’ve been getting interested in photography lately and am entertaining the idea of getting another camera.  If I do, I’d be looking for an upgrade from my trusty PowerShot A610 – minimum of 8 megapixels, a little more zoom (or an SLR that would let me grow it as much as my wallet will allow).  Maybe something like the EOS 40D, Digital Rebel XTi, or even something like the PowerShot G9 that could give me the simplicity of a point and shoot, with the expanability of an SLR … I honestly don’t know right now.

Does anyone have any suggestions or know of any good camera/photography resources? I’d like to do my homework and make an educated decision. I’m familiar with retailers like B&H and Adorama, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I’d love to hear it. I’m accumulating info right now, no purchase is imminent.

So I submit this to the collective knowledge of teh internets. If anyone knows any other good online resources, or has good first hand knowledge of any products (for or against), I love to to hear your stories. I know many of you have a camera or two, what do you like and dislike, etc…

soccer photoI tried my hand at some action photography this weekend with some mixed results. The shots on flickr aren’t great, and they are undeniably the best of the bunch. My brother’s men’s soccer team (the Lions) was playing in the “state cup for old men” this weekend. Despite the heat, humidity, and only having my trusty little point-and-shoot camera (Canon PowerShot A610), I got a few fun pictures and more importantly I enjoyed it, so all in all, I’d call it a win.

It has been a win for my brother too, they have won all 3 games so far (one more in an hour). I have been at two of the games and the combined score of those wins was 16-3, so they are showing up too…

UPDATE – they won all 4 games and thus the title… good job!  Final combined scores – 27-7.  Pretty solid tournament guys, good job.

In case anyone is curous about “The Dark Knight” (the next installment of the new and improved Batman saga), some photos have appeared on flickr.  No spoilers (that I am aware of) but it looks like the Tumbler is back, and this time it has a friend.  Also, Heath Ledger as the Joker looks like it could be a stroke of genius.

Wow.  I can’t imagine how excited this photographer was when he snapped this shot

While Jeremy Cowart is far from a household name, chances are really good if you listen to music or watch tv, you have seen some of his photography. Jeremy just released a new version of his site, which I find quite inspiring (both the site design AND the photography).

Thanks to Joshua Blankenship for pointing this out. Side note, how cool is it that Jeremy actually photographed the recent Blankenship wedding?

Along with Jeremy, Paul Armstrong (flickr) is one of my other favorites. Check these guys out, so good.
